Análisis de biopsias líquidas para el diagnóstico del cáncer: revisión sistemática
2020
The incidence of cancer has increased in recent years, especially in those over 65 years of age, posing a major health problem. Many tumours have a poor prognosis because they are diagnosed at very advanced stages. It is therefore especially important to incorporate liquid biopsy into clinical practice as a method for detecting tumours at very early stages. A systematic review was conducted, with the main objective of analysing the available literature on the use of liquid biopsy in the early diagnosis of cancer, and as a secondary objective, to determine the types of tumours that can be diagnosed early by liquid biopsy and the available biomarkers. The results indicate a lack of agreement …
Vacuolated PAS-Positive Lymphocytes on Blood Smear: An Easy Screening Tool and a Possible Biomarker for Monitoring Therapeutic Responses in Late Onse…
2018
Background: Primary aim was to investigate the diagnostic value of PAS-positive vacuolated lymphocytes on blood smear in Late Onset Pompe Disease (LOPD) patients and, secondly, to evaluate its potential utility in monitoring treatment effects. Methods: We examined blood smear of 26 LOPD patients. We evaluated 10 treated and 16 untreated LOPD patients. Among the latter group, 7 patients later initiated ERT and were tested again 6 months after start. Blood smear was also sampled from 82 controls and 19 patients with other muscle glycogenoses (MGSDs). PAS staining was used to evaluate: (1) presence of lymphocytes with glycogen-filled vacuoles, (2) quantification of vacuolated lymphocytes.Result…
Could selection tests detect the future performance of descriptive panellists ?
1996
Abstract This paper discusses the appropriateness of screening tests in explaining descriptive panellist performances. It is based on a case study aimed at forming a descriptive panel capable of flavour profiling Camembert cheeses. Eighteen subjects were selected using four sensory tasks evaluating smell sensitivities, olfactory knowledge, odour memory and descriptive ability. Three additional tests were proposed during the 45 hour training to evaluate the recognition memory for odours, the concentration and the verbal creativity abilities. Panellist performances were determined on repeatability and discrimination abilities, and on the complexity of the individual sensory space. Some signif…
Monod-based ‘single-data’ strategy for biodegradation screening tests
2020
Environmental contextObtaining biodegradation data over time can be difficult, especially when dealing with environmental compartments of increasing complexity. We evaluated the possibility of obtaining a full biodegradation depletion curve from a single biodegradation-time experimental measurement, and found that environmental information related to potential chemical persistence can be derived. The applicability of this ‘single-data’ strategy is illustrated using simulated and experimental data for several compounds. AbstractInformation obtained from biodegradability tests, e.g. half-life (t50) or kinetics parameters, is relevant in environmental risk assessment of new chemicals. In thes…
Assessing Procrastination
2019
Abstract. The short form of the General Procrastination Scale (GPS-K; Klingsieck & Fries, 2012 ; Lay, 1986 ) is a reliable self-report scale measuring general procrastination. The presumed one-dimensional factor structure of the scale, however, has never been examined. Thus, the purposes of this representative study were to examine its dimensionality and factorial invariance across age and sex, and to provide norm values of the German general population. The GPS-K was administered to a representative community sample ( N = 2,527; age range 14–95 years). A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted. To explore convergent validity, standardized scales of distress and life satisfact…
Capillary measurement of lactate and glucose for free flap monitoring.
2014
Summary Background It is reported that the salvage rate of free flaps is inversely related to the time interval between the onset of pedicle impairments and their clinical recognition. Monitoring of free flaps is therefore of major importance and clinical monitoring remains the most used technique because of lack of low-cost and non-invasive techniques. The authors suggested an efficient, simple and cheap technique to detect early thrombotic events in monitoring free flaps with skin paddle. Methods In this multicentre prospective study, measurements of capillary glucose and lactate in the flaps were done. These parameters were compared to standardized clinical monitoring during the first fi…
Age of onset of drinking and the use of alcohol in adulthood: a follow-up study from age 8–42 for females and males
2005
Aim To investigate longitudinally for both genders the relation between the age of onset of drinking and several indicators of alcohol use. Design and setting In the Finnish Jyvaskyla Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development, data have been collected by interviews, inventories, and questionnaires. Data on alcohol consumption was gathered at ages 14, 20, 27, 36 and 42 years; behavioural data at age 8. Participants A total of 155 women and 176 men; 90.4% of the original sample consisting of 12 complete school classes in 1968. Measurements The age of onset of drinking was determined based on participants’ responses that were closest to the actual age of onset of drinking. Four …
Relationship Status as an Influence on Cybersex Activity: Cybersex, Youth, and Steady Partner
2013
The authors focus on the influence of participants' having or not having a steady partner when reference to cybersex use. Participants were 1,239 young, Spanish individuals who completed the Internet Sex Screening Test. Results showed the influence of being in a relationship on certain consumption dimensions of cybersex; the influence was found to be greater in men than in women. In general, cybersex activity was higher for single participants, although it was also significant for participants with a steady partner. The authors' findings facilitate the comprehension of the effect of new technologies in intimate human relationships.
Sleep quality and its association with substance abuse among university students
2019
Abstract Objective Poor sleep is one of the greatest health problems with social significance whose prevalence started early in adolescence. The relationship between poor sleep quality and the use of alcohol and illicit substances among university students has not been studied. Our study aimed to determine these relationships and the factors influencing the risk of poor sleep in students from health sciences degrees which are the future healthcare providers. Patients and methods A cross-sectional study performed in European university students (n = 676). Sleep quality was assessed by measuring insomnia symptoms with the Athens insomnia scale (AIS). The CRAFFT screening test and AUDIT test w…
Testing utricular function by means of on-axis rotation
2005
Subjective visual vertical (SVV) estimation during on-axis rotation provides an efficient screening test of utricle function. The survey demonstrates that isolated disorders of peripheral utricular function can occur while SCC function appears normal. The present study aimed to investigate estimation of SVV during constant velocity yaw rotation (with the head held on-axis--to enhance any asymmetry between right and left utricular responses), as a useful screening test.In all, 230 patients were recruited from the dizziness clinic. For each patient, the SVV was estimated (a) while held stationary, and (b) during constant angular velocity (240 degrees/s), with the head centred on-axis. Bitherma…
